Waging Peace
(Article 1)
Did you hear about the 47 Jews, Christians and Muslims traveling together? It sounds like the beginning of a joke, but there's no comical punch line here. Last year, 11 Jews, 24 Christians and 12 Muslims left Atlanta and traveled to Turkey for ten days on an interfaith journey. Rabbis and ministers, imams and pastors, community leaders and faith activists left their homes, congregations and jobs to search for common ground. The brainchild of Reverend Wayne Smith, a southern Baptist preacher, the group was named "World Pilgrims."
(Article 2)
Every Friday for the last 15 years, the organization Women in Black has demonstrated for peace at Israeli intersections. Sometimes assaulted or spat on, the group of Arab and Jewish women still keeps growing.
You may think that peacemongers are a minority in Israel, but the majority of men and women on all sides of the conflict favor a peaceful, equitable solution. Those who actually collaborate to that end across ethnic and religious lines are oftimes overlooked. But they are far from insignificant or naive. All over Israel, which measures about the size of New Jersey, thousands of people--Muslims, Jews, Christians and others--are putting their lives and intellect through exhaustive measures to grow and foster a more productive reality for themselves and their neighbors.
