Seeking Sanctuary If you had to flee your homeland, leaving behind everything you own and everything you know, you would become a refugee. The United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) defines refugees as persons who are outside of their country and cannot return owing to a well-founded fear of persecution because of their race, religion, nationality, political opinion or membership in a particular social group. Presently, there are over 10 million refugees worldwide, many of them looking for a place to call home, many of them living lives that oscillate between fear, despair and hope.
According to the UNHCR, the three top countries opening their borders to many of the world's homeless and hosting the most refugees are Iran, Pakistan and Germany. These countries temporarily host displaced peoples in interim housing or refugee camps until they can return home or can find permanent housing elsewhere.
