THE NEXT GENERATION . BLAZING TRAILS WITH FAITH
If you are worried about the next generation of Muslim women, relax. It seems that we are in very capable hands with the ambitious batch of talented young women on the rise. Intelligent, confident and energetic, many ³twenty-something² Muslim women are blazing trails with their faith in full view.
The Azizah staff met several of these young women and learned they are feeling blessed to be Muslim and are eager to use their talents and their faith as springboards to further our community. These women are demonstrating remarkable courage and good judgment while taking risks and pushing boundaries. Besides their commendable aspirations and remarkable accomplishments at such young ages, three other things impressed Azizah. First, instead of feeling hampered by their Islamic beliefs, these young women are empowered by their faith to undertake tasks that would intimidate many of us. Secondly, they are looking to serve society and to help others. Their agenda is a selfless one and they have plans to search for medical cures, advocate for the marginalized, establish a childrenıs hospital, serve oppressed populations and much more. Lastly, despite their intelligence, their beauty and their talent, these women are humble and they instinctively acknowledge Allah for their successes. We are thrilled to introduce you to some of these college women who, guided by their Islamic beliefs, are making their mark in profound ways. Meet Anisah Rasheed, a campus queen in hijab who has been an entrepreneur since age nine and Noorain Khan, a triple major, multilingual Rhodes Scholar. You will hear from Ghofrane Benghanem, an award winning scientist determined to make a difference in geriatric medicine and Sarah Kureshi a medical student working for public health whose time in the 1500 meter placed her at the Women Islamic Games in Iran.
In this special report, we also look at an institution that will make a difference in the lives of Muslim American women in collegesan Islamic sorority. Imani Abdul-Haqq and Dr. Althia Collins share their motivation, despite the obstacles, for creating this historical institution and what it means for Muslim women.
Ignoring barriers, the sky is the limit for the next generation of Muslim Americans. Barely out of their teens, they have already proven their mettle against stiff competition. Chosen from among hundreds, Sarah Kureshi, Noorain Khan and Ghofrane Benghanem aptly demonstrate they have what it takes to be successful leaders in society. And when Anisah Rasheed delivered her spellbinding oration in the annual Historically Black College Queens Competition, Azizah delighted in the thunderous applause and glimpsed the future. We saw a new generation raising the bar to set higher standards in a myriad of ways, motivating us to accomplish our goals and nurture our community. Did we say we were impressed? Yes, the future is looking good.
